Glastonbury 2008 weather - hot, cold, wet or dry?

Glastonbury 2008 - don't drive on the errr...grassIf you’re reading this after 30th June you’ll be basking in the benefit of hindsight and already know the answer, but when it comes to the annual ritual of preparing for Glastonbury Festival, the first question asked every year is: “What’s the weather going to be like?”

Well, according to two of the top internet weather websites it will be a bit of a mixed bag, but encouragingly it is anticipated to be brighter, warmer and drier than the last two Pilton wash-outs!

According to weather.com’s ten-day forecast it’s going to be a glorious start to the Festival, with a predicted foggy start on Wednesday 25th giving way to a sunny afternoon with highs of 20°C. On Thursday a partly cloudy day, but still predominately sunny, is predicted with a slightly lower maximum of 18°C. Over the first two days of the Festival weekend the good weather is predicted to continue recording similar temperatures and only a slight chance of rain. However, on Sunday the possibility of downpours jumps to 60%, although that precipitation is likely to be showers as opposed to the monsoons that normally affect Glastonbury; the high temperature is likely to remain at around 19°C.

However, as soon as the bands take to the various stages on Friday that’s when it all gets a little wetter as weather.com predicts the chance of downpours hitting the Festival at 60%, combined with a slight drop in the anticipated high temperatures. Unfortunately, Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be much the same although precipitation is likely to be light showers as opposed to the monsoons that normally affect Glastonbury, with the day’s high likely to remain at around 19°C.

The Met forecast is even more pessimistic when it comes to precipitation, predicting the possibility of a slight shower on Wednesday, 25th - just in time to catch the majority of Festival goers erecting their tents! No further information beyond that is available at the time of writing but check back with the Met website to get the latest.

However, even if you enter Worthy Farm’s ‘BA4 4BY’ postcode into the forecast field on any weather websites, results returned are based on nearest biggest towns such as Shepton Mallet, Wells and Bath.  As any experienced veteran will tell you there appears to be a unique micro-climate within the Glastonbury Festival walled area, so be prepared for weather that bears absolutely no resemblance to the forecasts!

So, the advice this year, as with every year.....optimistically pack for sunny conditions...but definitely don’t forget your wellies and waterproofs! And keep checking the forecast before you leave because it changes daily!
